The fire analogy can also be extended to include the fact that the news actually created genuine fear in certain quarters and threatened to burn down a few noteworthy institutions as well. So what exactly is this Carrier IQ? Who should and who should not be concerned? And who should and who should not give a damn?

Carrier IQ is said to be an “embedded analytics company,” which basically spies on cell phones to give smartphone manufacturers and carriers the information about how their products are used. Monitoring this information can be priceless for the abovementioned companies, because it would help them keep track of the demands of the users and allow them to take business decisions accordingly. This could in turn help them make their product in accordance with the users’ needs and ensure that they have the knowledge that they need to improve their product.
Millions under the gun :
The scariest bit about the Carrier IQ is that most people don’t even realize that they have it installed on their phones, and are being monitored. This particular spy software isn’t a part of Android, iOS, or indeed BlackBerry OS, and is installed by either the carrier or the phone manufacturer. There’s a rolling counter on the official website the number of devices that have the software installed in them, and the number is already ticking over millions – but the problem is that no one know which phones are being monitored via this software. So basically a lot of the smartphones – maybe yours included – are being spied exhaustively, apparently to gather information about their usage, and no one has a clue if their own cell phone is being spied on or not.
Absolutely anything can be monitored :
The exact data that the software monitors or extracts from your cell phone depends on who installed it in the phone, since the purpose is to track down information that suits the particular client that uses it. However, according to Trever Eckhart – the first Carrier IQ developer – the software can monitor anything that you do on your phone – absolutely anything. Hence your passwords, credit card numbers and other private information, are not well, private any more. Whether you own a multi-billion dollar empire, or are an Average Joe middleclass grinder, such leakage of data can scare the daylight out of you. Cell phone tracking can be a scary phantom but Carrier IQ has taken the level of paranoia up quite a few notches, since no one has a clue as to what’s going on, and whether or not they’re under scrutiny.
Is it legal?
And what’s more, this spying activity could all be found illegal as well, since Carrier IQ is already under Senate investigation, due to the possibility that it might be blatantly violating the Wiretap act. Carrier IQ has defended its stance by claiming that their software is “counting and summarizing performance, not recording keystrokes or providing tracking tools.” Nevertheless, if Eckhart’s statement and the demonstration that he gave afterwards, are anything to go by it is clear that keystrokes can submit unique key codes to Career IQ on affected phones – so, Carrier IQ’s IQ might have let them down a bit there I’m afraid.
Therefore, with all things said and done, if being on the wrong end of cell phone spy is a part of your nightmare schedule, Carrier IQ might have conjured up a phantom to haunt you for ages.
