How To Keep Hackers Out Of Your Precious WordPress Site

Posted by wildrank on Sunday, October 27, 2013

WordPress Site hack
WordPress is a great platform to use when building a business, but if people are not careful they could end up in trouble. I've talked about a few ways they can keep hackers out of their site. If you run a WordPress blog you have reason to worry because there are hackers floating around looking to expose the weaknesses of people like you. If people can break into government networks it's obvious they will be able to hack into your site, but luckily you don't need to let that bother you. All the amazing hackers won't care one little bit about your insignificant blog because you're just small fish.

That being said, there are still millions of semi-skilled hackers who want to cause as much destruction as possible and your website is fair game. Because they won't be targeting you directly it's easy to stay out of their path by making sure you're following a few things. Take a look at what they are and implement them as soon as possible if you've neglected to do it so far.

The admin username has to go

When you first set up a WordPress blog you're automatically assigned the 'admin' username and you must change it as quickly as possible. Hackers can slam your site with millions of different password attempts and they might get lucky if you didn't choose a strong enough password. That will obviously not matter if you've chosen a unique username and you'll be much safer.

Limit the login attempts

We've already just touched on the fact someone will be able to attack your site with millions of unique login attempts using a multitude of different passwords. You can actually install a plugin that will lock someone out as soon as they've had X failed attempts. They won't be able to log in on the same IP address for usually around 30 minutes. Just make sure you know your password so you don't lock yourself out.

The right hosting company

If you jump on the shared hosting bandwagon you must understand what you're letting yourself in for. It means your site could be compromised even though you've taken all the necessary precautions. That is because you share a server with other people and their website could be hacked into. Suddenly your website will go offline and you could lose a lot of money, so always go with a decent hosting provider.

Try to avoid free

Free might seem good in the beginning, but nothing is ever truly free as you'll probably find out. When someone isn't getting paid to update a WordPress theme or plugin it's unlikely they will dedicate the time required to make sure it's secure. The WordPress world moves so fast and developers need to stay to the same pace. Think about that before you install anything free on your site.

Don't forget the little things

There are some obvious things you must not forget. A strong password is essential these days and you'd be crazy not to include numbers and upper/lower case letters. Updating everything is also important because the updates eliminate security concerns. If you stick to the advice we've spoken about today it should keep you safe. You must also remember to back your site up regularly in case the worst was to happen.
