More people work from a home office these days which means they don't have an IT team to help keep them safe, so I've talked about some software they can use instead.
Are you one of those people who are now running your business from a home office? It must feel good sleeping about 10 meters away from your place of work, but it's not all rosy because security is still an important issue. We're going to look at some software you can use to beef up the security inside your home office so your business will always be safe.
When you run your business from your computer you will probably have dozens of different online accounts and you need a strong password for each one. It's a bad idea to use the same password for all of your accounts, but how are you meant to remember them? If you start using LastPass you can save all your passwords inside the software and you only need to remember a master password. It means if anyone breaks into your home office they won't be able to find your passwords in the back of a notebook.
Carbonite Backup
You might get a nasty surprise one morning when you roll out of bed and walk through to the office. As soon as you switch on the computer you might find it's passed away. When you have all your important work documents on your hard drive it's obviously something you can't let happen. I'm sure you will have an external hard drive too, but you should also save everything into the cloud. Carbonite will take regular backups of your entire system and you can download everything onto a new computer if the worst was to happen.
Box Online Storage
It's better to have as many backups as possible because something could always go wrong with one of them if you're really unlucky. You can rent online storage space from Box and you will have a special folder on your desktop that syncs with your online account. Just throw everything into the folder and all your hard work will be saved into the cloud. You can also use a special app on your phone and iPad so you can access everything in your online folder no matter where you are.
QXF Anti-Keylogging
When you work out of a home office you don't need to worry as much about people hacking into your computer, but it can still happen and you never know who is sitting outside in a van. If someone did manage to get into your computer they might be able to see what you're typing. This becomes a problem when you enter passwords because once people steal them they can get access to your money and other important things. Anti-keylogging software will stop this from happening unless you're dealing with a real professional.
Prey Anti Theft
If a burglar broke into an office building it's unlikely they would steal your computer because there are so many others that look exactly the same. When they break into your home it's different because your computer will be the only one in the office. If you spent a lot of money on it there is a good chance you won't want to let it go without a fight. If you download Prey software you will be able to find your computer if someone steals it as long as they are stupid enough to switch it on.
Getting the basics right
Just because a new computer comes with anti-virus software doesn't mean you don't need anything else to keep you safe. I think everything we've spoken about today could be classed as the basics. If you make sure you have all of them covered your business will be a lot safer.
