Three Tech Tricks Hacks for Entrepreneurs and Businesses
Technology is supposedly there to help us and to make life easier. It's supposed to automate the things we don't like spending time on, organise our data, and generally take some of the weight off of our shoulders when it comes to workflow and productivity.
The problem is though, that all too often it really doesn't feel this way. Unfortunately it seems that all too often our technology does nothing but slow us down and cause us problems. Either our computer is crashing or it's taking hours to load… Or maybe you just can't get to grips with the new software you're using, or you're being told that you need to do another lengthy upgrade.
Clearly if this is the case for you, then you're somewhat missing the point of having the technology in the first place. Something is going wrong or getting lost in translation along the way, so here are some tips to help you make your technology start working for you again.
Keep a Tablet on Your Desk
If you work on a desktop PC then keeping a tablet on your desk next to you might seem like overkill. In fact though this can be an incredibly useful device to keep handy for a lot of reasons…
For one, if you have a tablet to hand then you'll be able to quickly and easily check things like e-mail, the time or a website you need for work without having to load it up on your PC. This then allows you to work much more quickly and with fewer interruptions.
At the same time, with a tablet on your table you'll be able to take quick notes using the various note apps, or you'll be able to make doodles or even take photos to help you remember things. The added bonus of using a tablet rather than your PC is that you won't be as likely to get drawn into e-mail answering and so will probably be less distracted (thanks to the on-screen keyboard which is more fiddly to use).
Additionally, by browsing the web on a tablet rather than a PC and downloading files on there, you won't slow your main computer down so much. And even when your PC is taking a while to load, you can use your tablet to check e-mail while you wait…
Use IFTTT
IFTTT is a web app that is relatively little known. Essentially this is an app that lets you set up relationships between your other web apps and mobile apps. For instance you can get it to e-mail any files you add to a certain folder in Dropbox, or to post your Tweets to Facebook. The blurb describes this as letting you 'put the web to work for you', and that's really what you essentially get to do if you use this well.
Buy Smaller Devices
A useful and simple tech tip to help improve your speed when working with technology is to do regular 'clean ups' to remove unnecessary files and to organise your desktop shortcuts etc. This is a good idea, but unfortunately it's something that many of us won't actually get around to for the simple fact that we have 'more important things to do'.
So here's a tip – buy a device that doesn't have that much storage built in. A Surface Pro 1 with a 64GB hard drive for instance. Then you buy an external hard drive and store what you need on there. What this does though is to force you into being more organised with your files and into only installing things if you need them. You can still keep large files, but you'll find that searching your harddrive is quicker and that generally the whole thing remains a lot more organised.
