Protecting your e-mail, social networking, and other online accounts are definitely a priority. In today’s world, some of our daily tasks involve going online---from checking and transferring finances via online banking to buying stuff in online shopping sites. Wouldn’t it be great to have a worry-free time while doing stuff online such as playing facebook slots or checking our e-mail? That is why it would be very important to keep our online accounts safe and protected from hackers and malicious software.
Having our information and other important details stolen would definitely be the last thing we ever want to happen when going online. It would definitely be helpful to know some tips on keeping our online accounts safe and secured. Below are some simple yet useful tips that can help keep your online accounts secured.
1. Avoid clicking links from e-mail messages. It’s very common for the most of us to receive e-mail messages from friends, businesses and more. Sometimes, these messages contain links directing to other websites. Just to be on the safe side, it would be best not to just click on these links. Make sure to check the authenticity of the message (was it really sent by a legitimate contact?). Remember that some spammy e-mails can get through your inbox, with some disguising their real addresses and identities. Also, check the link and examine if it directs to a clean and legitimate website.
2. Avoid Phishing sites. Phishing is commonly done by sending an e-mail message that instructs the unsuspecting recipient to click on the link and input his/her password on the website where it redirects to. For example, let’s say that you received an e-mail from your bank asking you to change your password by clicking on the link in the message. The first thing that you need to do is to call your bank and check if they sent you the e-mail. Next would be checking the URL address of the link. Make sure that it matches the actual URL of your bank’s website. If all the indicators are positive, then you can safely proceed. However, if it’s in the contrary, make sure to immediately delete the message.
3. Change your password regularly. Just recently, the Internet was abuzz with the Heartbleed bug which puts your password, credit card info, etc. at a risk of being exploited by hackers and cybercriminals. The immediate action recommended by computer experts was changing your password. With or without the aforementioned bug, it is still a good habit to change your password from time to time. Doing such can make attacks on your online accounts less likely to be successful.
4. Make sure to log out every online session especially when using a public computer. Do not just close your internet browser after checking your e-mail or Facebook for example. Make it a habit o click the “Log Out” link or button when you’re done, especially if you are using a public computer. This tip is very simple yet some internet users fail to do this.
