There are so any users in the world use ADSL routers/modems to connect to the Internet. ADSL routers also known as DSL modems, which is a device used to connect the computer to the DSL phone line. However, many peoples across the globe are unaware of the fact that DSL modem has a serious vulnerability in it which can easily be exploited by anyone who have only basic knowledge of computer. In this post, Today I will show you how to exploit this serious vulnerability that lies in the ADSL routers so as to gain complete access to the ADSL router setting.
Normally every router comes with a default username and password which is very important to gain access to the router settings and to configure the router or device. Actually vulnerability lies in the default username and password that normally comes with the factory settings of the router. Usually every routers device come preconfigured from the Internet Service provider and hence the many users do not bother to change the password later.
This makes it possible for the cracker or attackers to gain unauthorized access to the ADSL router and modify its saved settings using a common set of default usernames and passwords list. Bellow I have explained step by step instruction for how to hack an Ethernet ADSL Router.
How to Hack an Ethernet ADSL Router
Step 1: First download and install
IP Scanner to scan IPs.
Step 2: Now go to
whatismyipaddress website to find your IP address. Note it down.
Step 3: Open Angry IP Scanner, now check option called IP Range: where you need to enter the range of IP address for scanning.
Note : Suppose your IP is 113.193.74.12, you can set the range something as 113.193.70.0 to 113.193.100.100 so that there exists at least 300 IP addresses in the range.
Step 4: Now go to Tools->Preferences and select the Ports Tab. Under Port selection enter Port 80 as shown and click OK.
Step 5: Now goto to the Display tab and select the option “Hosts with open ports only” and click on OK.
Step 6: Now click on Start button. After a few minutes, the IP scanner will show a list of IPs with Port 80 open.
Step 7: Now copy any of the IP from the list, paste it in your browser’s address bar and hit enter. You will be prompted for the username and password. Since most users do not change the default passwords, it should most likely work with the default username and password. So just enter admin as login-name and password , If you are lucky person, you should gain access to the router settings page where you can easily modify any of the router default settings. This settings page can vary from router to router. A sample router settings page is shown below:
If you do not succeed to gain access, select another IP from the list and repeat the step-7. At least 1 out of 10 IPs will have a default password and hence you will surely be able to gain access to the router settings page.
What Hacker can do by Gaining Access to the Router Settings?
After gaining access to the router settings, Attacker can modify any of the router settings which results in the malfunction of the any router. As a result of such modification, the target user’s computer will be disconnected from the Internet. Even attacker can copy the ISP login details from the router to steal the Internet connection or even hijack the DNS by pointing it at a rouge DNS server. If this happens, the victim will have to reconfigure/reset the router settings in order to bring it back to normal.
If you are using an ADSL router to connect to the Internet, it is highly recommended that you immediately change your default password to prevent yourself from any such kind of attacks in the future. Since the configuration varies from router to router, you need to contact your ISP for details on how to change the password for your model.
